Motherhood is a great blessing. There is no other feeling in the world than knowing you helped bring another person into this world. While most of the time is of great joy, there are your trying times. You worry are you doing everything you can for your son or daughter, are you raising them up right. As well as making sure you take care of your spouse. For us, it was an exciting time when we found out we were having a child, we had been married for about 6 months. We were on the older end of the spectrum of being new parents. We quickly learned that morning sickness doesn’t mean just in the morning. It was an all day thing for me. We were excited to learn that we could find out the sex of our child at about 15 weeks. So we had the debate do we want to know or not. But being the planner I am, I had to know.
So we had the ultrasound to find out the sex of our child. They told us we were going to have a girl. We were excited, we went right over to our local gun shop and we bought our child their first rifle (of course pink). That weekend we found out was Memorial Day weekend, so we were heading to Williamsburg, and of course we had to hit the outlet stores. We were excited, we had bought many clothes for our new child, we even had found the bedding for her room.
At our 20 week ultrasound (the one you typically find out the sex of the child if you are interested), the tech asked us, “What did I tell you that you were having?” “We said a girl.” He replied, “This has only happened to me one other time in my 15 years of doing this, but you are having a boy.
I was in total shock and disbelief, and couldn’t speak for 3 days. I’m was thinking to myself, I don’t know anything about boys. My husband was totally excited, the ladies in the front office heard his cheer. We quickly took everything back and started to buy for our son.
We had already had names picked out if we were to have a girl or a boy, so we didn’t have the struggle of trying to find a name. We were approaching the end of our pregnancy, and I had gone in for my typical doctors appointment. They told me that it’s time for you to check into the hospital, as I had high blood pressure, so they needed to monitor me and the baby, and they were going to induce labor.
Well the next morning came and the induction didn’t take, so for the safety of our child and me, we had a c-section. Marcus Joseph Kyle was born, after they cleaned him up, they allowed my husband to see him, the nurses then took Marcus away to the NICU. As he had trouble breathing because his lungs were not fully developed. Many people came to visit us over the next several hours, my husband was playing host and taking everyone down to See Marcus. They informed us, that they could not keep Marcus overnight and that they would then need to transport him to UVA.
About 8pm that night, they brought Marcus in so that I could see him before they left with him. He was so tiny in the incubator, on this gurney. It was so heartbreaking to see him like this. It became harder over the next few days, as I will still in the hospital and Marcus was 2 hours away from us. All we wanted to do was be there with him.
A week after Marcus was born he was released from the NICU. He is doing well. At this time, he is 19 months old. He keeps us on our toes and is running around and getting into everything.
You have your trying moments, but they all seem to be erased when he comes up and gives you a great big hug and kiss. I look forward to watching him continue to grow and become a little independent man.
